On May 13th this year, ION will be hosting a one day event that will be held in New Delhi, bringing together a select group of leaders from across India who represent church, missions, Bible agencies and theological institutions. The purpose of this Think Tank is to examine orality in India and to consider whether it is time to launch a nationwide collaborative orality initiative.
600 million people in India do not have access to the Bible because they do not read. The church in India is growing at an unprecedented rate, yet 60% of new believers are functionally illiterate. Christian leaders across the nation have recognized the critical importance of oral approaches in discipleship, Scripture engagement and leadership development to the future of the church in India.
I will be joined at the Think Tank by Dr. Alex Philip, who serves on the ION Advisory Board, to speak on the state of orality globally and the role which India can play in the International Orality Network and global movement. We will also look at the importance of access to the whole Bible in one’s mother tongue to reaching oral communities and an initiative to accelerate training of mother tongue translators. Our prayer is that as a result of this gathering the lives of oral learners across India and around the globe will be changed for eternity.
