Global Consultation on Music and Missions, Nairobi, Kenya. 6-9 August 2018 Living Stones: Filled by His Spirit, Creating for His Glory

Global Consultation on Music and Missions (GCoMM) aims to explore how God is drawing the nations to Himself through music and related arts, skilling His craftsmen for the work of Gospel proclamation, Christian discipleship, and for His glory and pleasure. Founded in 2003, GCoMM’s first gathering was held at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. Subsequent events were held at Bethel University, St. Paul, Minnesota (2006), Singapore Bible College, Singapore (2010), and in Chiang Mai, Thailand (2015).

For four full days in August this year, GCoMM returns to the international arena in Kenya. The event will be hosted at Brackenhurst, an international conference centre and eco-destination. We write to invite pastors, elders, deacons, missionaries, musicians, and artists to consider joining us there!

The Plenary Sessions

Featured guests include Dr. Donald K. Smith, Dr. Jean Kidula, Rev. Calisto Odede, Hellen Mtawali, and Susanna Harrington. Open discussions, community participation, and interactive learning during plenary sessions will aim to be Word-centered, concentrating on how God, in His fullness, endows his church with creative abilities and skill for His ultimate glory. Christ is in us, and He is the One equipping us.

That should spur God’s people from merely fulfilling a function to truly impacting eternity!

The Breakout Sessions

The range of topics will cover the theology of worship in the Body of Christ as expressed in many cultures and denominations, the impact of arts and orality in discipleship, and how sound and visual ideas are used to proclaim the Gospel, whether within the closed studio or in the open field. Artists will come away with practical tools to impact their communities with the light of Christ, and will have opportunity to learn how, through the use of local visual and performing arts of a community, to address the mental, physical, and spiritual effects of trauma.

Arts in Action

In an informal setting, attendees may participate by giving brief demonstrations, presenting research, or offering case studies relevant to their various contexts. Abstracts and proposals may be submitted for inclusion in the 10-minute slots.
